CONTEXT
When I joined the team, design was still finding its footing — a part-time designer supporting a 10+ engineer product team.
As the first full-time designer, I set out not just to refine the product, but to establish design as a core part of how we build and think.
With no existing design system or processes, I began by defining a clear design vision and creating a scalable design library that unified the product experience.
Alongside that, I worked to shift the team’s mindset — introducing collaborative reviews, embedding design earlier in development, and demonstrating how design could drive clarity, efficiency, and innovation.
This journey taught me that building design maturity isn’t only about improving interfaces — it’s about cultivating trust, shared ownership, and a culture that values design as a strategic force.
OUTCOME
What began as a one-person effort to introduce design into an engineering-led team has grown into a more collaborative, design-aware culture — one that values creativity, clarity, and the user experience at every stage.
Over time, our design team has grown — we’ve welcomed a new designer, and with that, a stronger sense of design identity within the organisation. Together, we built a robust design system that not only brought UI and UX consistency but also allowed us to prototype faster and scale development more smoothly across teams.
I’ve built much closer partnerships with our product, engineering, and leadership teams, which has helped us align around a shared vision: to raise the bar for B2B design, create experiences that truly serve our users, and contribute to the long-term success of both the product and the business.
Even in a B2B environment — where user contact can often be limited — we’ve made it a priority to talk to our users directly, listen to their needs, and use their feedback to guide our decisions.
Beyond the daily design work, I’m proud of how we’re shaping the culture around design. I’m deeply invested in fostering creativity, collaboration, and curiosity within the team — mentoring new talent, refining our processes, and continuously advocating for design as a driver of innovation and impact.
